Chapter 1 - Samuel

For as long as I remember each day starts the same. I am forced into waking life with the same countless dream that floods my mind day in and day out. It is as if there was some point my mind was trying to make that I could never quite figure out and my punishment is to repeatedly be reminded of this failure of the obvious. For as long as I remember each day, starts like this.

I, a lone child wallows in a dark empty silence. Memories of a long ago past flood through my mind and I appear resting in a vast open meadow, surrounded by disturbingly familiar locations. In front of me lies a small farm, to my right a raging volcano and mountain range, to my left cliff faces that seemed to ascend limitlessly to the clouded sky above. I take a moment to look around me, the bright green grass of the meadow sheds a glowing light that contrasts against the brooding dark clouded sky above me. The volcano in the distance rumbles with a furious plume of molten lava and smoke and the mountain range looks cold and barren against the glowing red of the volcanic display nearby. I get to my feet and focus on the farmhouse ahead of me in the distance.

The farmhouse gives me a warm safe feeling like home and I begin to run towards it, but as I run invisible objects seem to force me away from getting closer. I push through these annoying obstacles and succeed in reaching the farm. The farm house appears to be aged, coloured like the dry earth of a desert. The wood seems weathered and splintered. The roof is a corregated dark grey. Upon opening the door it emits a loud creek and as I step inside everything around me falls silent. Dust sways in a timeless motion, relecting the light from an only window and a slain family rests inside. A dead woman is flayed on a chair in front of me spread out as if she was receiving me after a long departure. On the table lay the body of a small boy dirty, beaten and bloody. On the floor nearby a girl's body rested on it's side in a similar condition. The house is a cold dark mess, the shadows blur the contents of the room and a window blasts a cylinder of light on the woman. Cuts decorate her skin and her clothes are torn, leaving her body completely exposed.

Staring at her is like staring into the sun and the glowing heart stings my eyes but I can't look away, I approach her slowly stretching a hand out towards her. The closer I get the more I am forced to look away and when I closed my eyes my head suddenly begins to fill with screams and painful shrieks but then, all of a sudden, it falls silent again. I open my eyes and suddenly she appears, standing in front of me. Her eyes open, bottomless pools of darkness swallow me and the hallowing sounds that fill the room, course through my body, piercing my brain and render me unconcious.

I awake, back in the meadow. Everything begins to turn to flame and meteors descend from the now blackened red sky. A gigantic plume of fire erupts from the volcano. From its base pours thousands of demons and it appears as if all their eyes are set on me yet they charge towards the farmhouse. I look over to the farmhouse, the woman bursts out from inside carrying a young girl and clenching onto the hand of a boy as she turns and heads towards the giant cliff faces. The earth begins to shake and it feels as if the whole area is going to implode around me. The cliff faces rumble with intensity and huge chunks fall from above.

The woman comes to two entrances of the cliff face and frantically decides which to take, turning back she sees the demonic hordes approaching and she picks the closest one. I rise to my feet, sweat pouring down my face I see the demons begin to flood the lands now and I have but little choice than to run towards the cliff faces. I urge myself to run, run faster and head towards the entrance the woman took but just before I get there it shakes and the wall caves in on itself creating a force that drops me to my knees. I turns to see the thousands of demons now set on me approaching at a rapid rate. I look to my right and see the young boy on the ground sitting in a ball cowering and crying. He seems distraught but the loss of his mother. I run to him and the young boy looks up to me and grabs my hand, I notice his legs and arms are bruised but he pulls me towards the second cliff face. He lets go and I follow into the darkness of the cavern, I lose track and continue running in the cold blackness.

As we run it feels like the whole area is collapsing around us and as we make it through the entrance we turn a corner and my feet become entangled, I lose my balance, with nothing to hold onto and no ability to see it feels as though I am falling into a great depth momentarily until my jaw hits the ground with a tremendous thud. Dissoriented, I try to remember where I am and look back to see what I tripped on but my attention quickly returns to the boy running ahead of me. I can hear the screams again and the roars of the thousands of bloodthirsty demons that approached me, I close my eyes and hurl myself along the ground sprinting towards the direction of the boy, running and hoping that I don't come to a stop.

Sunlight hurts my eyelids, I begin to slowly open my eyes. To my left building walls sprout outwards, a concrete path is laid out in front of me and to my right, a gigantic barbed wire fence. I turn to look backwards but as I do two men push through me running down the path appearing to be in a panic, they yell at each other looking back as they weild their weapons. 'Have the creatures stopped?' I wonder. I follow them around the corner of the building. The light blinds me and as my eyes adjust another world appears in front of me, one covered in an illuminate white shine, the fluorescent sun glistens upon the surface that shapes the buildings before me. A city of tall-white curved buildings, smooth and round. Two great structures proceed me surrounded by smaller vessels and encapsuled by a great white wall. Along the wall  was a wire fence crowned with barbed wire. I could see steps grow from the courtyard infront of me and the well manicured gardens with the greenest grass. The glow was welcoming and the feeling relieved me to be there. I could see the playground in the courtyard which had two indistinguishable characters standing on it; they were exchanging heated words, a woman and a young man. Then I noticed the two that passed me before. I ran towards them, they speak as if I wasn't even there.

"We have to get out of here," one mutters quickly.

"There is no escape, you should know that by now!" stresses the other.

The distressed man looks towards the giant barbed fence.

"The fence isn't 'that' high!" He fumbles and frantically grabs onto the fence,

"This place isn't real, nothing is real anymore!"

The man climbs as quickly as possible, suddenly I look back to the woman, standing there with the young man collapsed next her she stares at me. Then the world I'm in begins to crumble, the sky begins to crack and the soil around me falls into nothing, the buildings perish at their base and collide within one another. Everything begins to wither into a great glow of white beneath me and the city becomes surrounded by a visage of the woman, her eyes glowing a profusely bright red and growing closer and closer, the two men nearby argue as if nothing was happening. The manifestation takes form and becomes real, like a god emerging from the sky and grabs the man climbing the fence and crushes him, moving its other arm towards the next man.

As I watch I notice another great hand coming towards me, helplessly I look for something, I notice a spiralling path that leads to what looks like some kind of glowing gateway. I see the young farm boy running towards it. Fear surges through me and with a burst of speed I flee after the gate, feeling the force of the mysterious woman dragging me back and just as the world implodes around me I leap into the portal.

Everything goes silent and dark.

I sit up, the glare of the fluorescent white light stings my eyes as I wake from another restless sleep. I part the blanket and turn to the side of the bed, my guardian Jacob is already awake on the edge of his bed staring at me. "You were making noises this time Sammy" He groans. I don't mind Jacob, he's a nice guy and all but he can be a little condescending at the best of times. Though I have to give him credit, he does put up with a lot from me with the nightmares and all.

"Time to get ready Sam, I'll wait here."

My room is like many of the rooms here in the temple Elysium. That same old white warm glow of white tile. Warm to the eye and cold to the touch. Two lockers rest at the ends of our beds which are parallel to each other and rest against opposite walls with mantles between them, both with a light source. An electronically locked door faces my bed and behind my bed stands a great glass window framed into the wall which screens an image of the outside, which seemed to transition depending on the time.

I rise to my feet and and drift backwards a little, then suddenly I snap back into focus when I'm off balance. I shrug it off and grab my jumpsuit and head into the bathroom. The bathroom tiles shock my warm feet and remind me of my daily routine. I run a small pool of water in the stainless steel basin to wash my face in, hopefully to wake me up I think. I grab my medicine from dispenser above the basin,  RG-04 and Multi-Vitamins and wash them down with some water. I hunch over the basin and lean over into the mirror. Small specks of hair appear to be growing from my jaw-line, something that had been slowly occuring over the past month. I run my hand through my cheek and listen to the smooth rustling sound it generates. I hear Jacob's howl from the other room and quickly dress into my grey jumpsuit marked Alpha 01 in yellow. I exit the bathroom and give him a healthy grin. "Ready when you are Jack," I say to him. Jacob rises up and grabs his sidearm, walking over to the voice activator along the door and muttering monotonely 'Jacob.' The door releases for us and we head down the long white corridor to enter yet another great day of temple teachings.

I have been at the temple for as long as I can remember. Jacob only joined me when I was old enough to have my own room at the age of twelve. The temple isn't all that bad, we get the best possible teaching and entertainment and our only price is some tasks that we undergo each day. On weekends we get an abundance of outdoor time, and we get to play sports together or watch the local tv stations.

We get to the learning network and Jacob gestures me inside. "I will be back in forty-five minutes, just don't skip anything because I'll check it later," he tells me. He opens the door and watches me enter the cubicle, nodding to me as he turns to leave and the door closes behind him. I quickly study the same old circular room with a chair in the centre, the big leather and steel chair is fitted with several programs that range from interactive displays to visual content that is also mainly used for learning. Each of us have a necklace with a universal serial bus or USB that contains our current progress for the year which we use in similar working stations. I sit down and plug my profile into the dock and lean back as the leg-lift comes up. The screen passes over from behind my head and infront of my eyes lighting up as it adjusts to a safe reading distance. Today I get a history module on the island.

I had only been outside the temple once before on a field trip when I was younger, it was a curiously daunting experience as the outside was so familiar to me yet this new place seemed so different. However the area was fenced off and still within the district. I can remember exiting the eastern wing of the temple, we passed through a set of great steel doors which were heavily guarded. I was scared at the though that perhaps they were guarding us from a greath outside threat, but when we got to the other side it was unspeakable. The clean courtyard I was used to was nothing compared to the wild jungle that was ahead of me. I grabbed my friend Jocelyn's hand and we made our way along a treated path though the jungle. As we walked The scientists told us about the native flora and fauna and how they shared the same genetic gifts we have which made them highly intelligent. They all appeared to have collars on them however which arose some questions within the group. The scientists told us that it was mandatory to keep track of their breeding and status.

As kids and even now we never discuss temple related topics unless they are about the sports or activities we get to partake in. Everytime one of us mentions an unspoken subject they get taken away for awhile. So we just try to get by, hinting at each other about any recent news or events while disguising the topic. I remember some time after our excursion one of the kids continued questioning the collars and was carted off towards the guard posts near the courtyard. He was very loud but returned a very quiet and changed individual. We tried to get an answer out of him but he just told us to never question the temple or its staff. I spoke to Jacob shortly after and he told me that I'll stay out of trouble if I just continue doing what I do, my daily routine and nothing else. He told me it will only be a matter of time before I'm eighteen and that I'll get to leave this place, so I listened and I did.

The forty-five minute marker flashes up and suggests that I have a break. Ten minute recommend, fithteen minute maximum. Jacob is generally pretty casual about this and allows me the fithteen minutes. I sit outside the cubicles and watch Jacob communicate with the other guardians over the network. Rarely do we see each other inside the temple. They have orchestrated an elaborate roster which determines where our next class will be. They have timed it down to the second.  Ultimately it is to assure we never see or communicate with each other within the temple. Not once in my life-time have I ever seen anyone outside the temple playgrounds. I hear him discussing the next inter-change and getting an update on the current roster. He carries a device that updates wirelessly over the temple's network which has my information regarding my study level and my grading along with my daily routine. I was so eager to see it once that it ruined my day knowing how boring my life sounded. So now-a-days I just keep reminding myself that it won't be long and I'll be free of the temple and get a chance to fend for myself.
